Also, some students have to look after their families as well. They fail to manage their time and as a result of that, they struggle with their academics.

Not only in college but good time management skills are necessary for personal growth as well. College life is the best time to inculcate and learn such skills that can help for the rest of your life.

Distractions

During your college life, the chances are high that you lose your focus and get distracted a number of times. The reasons can be different for every person. Some get distracted because of their company, some because of their relationships.

As a student, you should never forget your ultimate goal. A college is a great place where you learn, grow, make good connections, and build the foundation of your professional career. So, if you do not utilize this place and the time spent here, you will regret it in the future.

Moreover, when they sit to study, distractions do not let them reach their set goals. One of the biggest distractions while studying is our mobile phone. Also, we can say that this is a major cause of procrastination.

So, it is advised that whenever you sit to study, turn off your notifications and keep your mobile phone away, especially when you are making your college assignments.

Wrong subjects

For students, especially those who are about to witness the transition phase from school to college, it is important to know their interests and then choose the courses accordingly.

A clear state of mind is necessary to make decisions. Though it is common for every student, sometimes it feels like the college assignments will just kill us. If you have also felt it but just for some particular subjects, it can be signal that you are studying wrong subjects.

When you are present in the classes just physically, when you do not feel happy while learning something new, you may have chosen the subjects that do not make you curious.

The question is, what can you do when you realize it?

Inexperienced teachers

Though most of the professors at colleges and universities are highly experienced, sometimes their teaching methods do not make the magic. College students find the teaching methods of some of their professors boring and monotonous. That is also one of the major reasons why they fail to perform well in their academics.

Furthermore, in colleges, doubt clearing sessions are not possible the way they are in schools. The reason is that the number of students in one class. This also creates a big problem for the students as they have to find solutions on their own. As a result, they end up having poor grades.

Bad company

During your college, you will meet hundreds of people, make new connections and friends. However, it is necessary to be in the right company of human beings. Sometimes, the people around you hold you and do not let you do what you want and achieve. It can also be the academic score you want to get.

Bad company does not always refer to the people who make you do wrong things. The ones who stop your growth, play the victim card all the time and make you feel guilty should also be considered as bad company.

Be aware of the manipulators as well in your college. They have the ability to make you do what they want. You must avoid being around such people. Other than that, you will meet people who just call you a friend when in trouble. Be with the people who can reciprocate and help you in your tough times. Choose your circle wisely.

No inspiration

Finding inspiration to do better is always essential. Not only in college for academics, but throughout life, you need some inspiration to work and grow. Some students get it from other students, some from their family, some from their friends. Some students get inspired by successful entrepreneurs and some get their inspiration on the internet.

It does not matter where you find your inspiration. What matters is that you get inspired to work for your betterment. As mentioned above, college students easily fall prey to distractions. So, it becomes even more important for them to find their inspiration, avoid any distractions, and achieve their goals. Be it related to their academics or their professional life.

Poor mental health

Poor mental health is also a major reason for students’ poor performance in academics. According to Suicide Prevention Resource Center, mental health issues in students can reduce their quality of life, satisfaction with college experience, affect their relationships. It also says that this can have long-term consequences for the students affecting their future employment, health and earning potential. They even fail to focus on their academic projects. SPRC also reveals that five percent of students do not finish their education because of psychiatric disorders.

So, you can understand the impact of poor mental health on the life of a student. Lack of maturity, skills, and worries related to their career are some of the factors affecting students’ mental health.

Medical issues

Some college students have serious medical conditions because of which they could not focus on their academics. Even if they want to get good marks and work for it, they fail. Just because of their medical issues. Some students even have to leave their college in-between and compromise their academics. This is something that is quite uncontrollable.

However, in contrast, there are people who live their dreams even with their ailments. Have you heard of Christine Ha? She is the first blind contestant in Master Chef US. And guess what! She even managed to win the show. I think this example is enough to inspire you.

No basic understanding of subjects

We have already discussed that choosing the subjects of your choice is essential. Those who choose the wrong subjects for themselves struggle throughout college life. This point is similar to that. A lot of students do not even have a basic understanding of the subject that they are studying.

You cannot expect charted accountancy from a doctor (unless he/she has studied relevant subjects). To excel in a particular subject, the first and foremost necessity is understanding the basics. However, a lot of students ignore it and hence affect their academic scores.

If you are struggling to score good marks in a particular subject, you really need to have a firm understanding of the basics. Basically, it acts as the foundation of a building. If you have a strong one, you will stand tall (stay on the top) for long, and if not, you will fall quickly.

Poor infrastructure

Even the college infrastructure can affect your academics and your professional life. To excel in some fields, students need to have good practical knowledge. If the college does not provide the necessary equipment to students to enhance their skills, undoubtedly, they will perform poorly in their academics.

Just imagine how a student will learn film-making without using cameras, lights, and other necessary equipment? If the colleges have poor infrastructure, surely the students will suffer.

Summing up

As discussed in this article, there can be several reasons for students’ poor performance in academics. Analyze your day to day life and understand what holds you. This will surely help you find the solutions.
